Hard City - An Ode to B-movies

Board Games – As a kid my mom worked two jobs and waitressing on the weekends meant we got to spend a lot of time with my grandparents. Living in the country I never had cable so those weekends with my grandparents meant I could binge on all the TV I never had a chance to watch at home. Because my mom would pick us up really late at night I could usually stay up late watching garbage on basic cable. One of my favorite shows as a young boy was USA’s Up All Nite which showed terrible movies with a guest host that alternated between Gilbert Godfried and Rhonda Shear. This program exposed me to the Troma Films and the world of awful effects and mutant monsters. I still have a special place in my heart for those terrible movies.

So needless to say I was pretty excited to paint up Hard City by Hexy Games. My client didn’t have the Kickstarter version so there were only four officers and a boatload of toxic mutants to paint up. The thing I like about toxic mutants is they’re not zombies and they play off the fear I had as a child of nuclear waste or war causing an apocalypse.

I used the Citadel Contrast Paints and some traditional highlighting to get these painted up fairly quickly. Using one of Citadel’s texture paints I was able to create a cool concrete effect with only a few steps. I hate paying the premium on these paints especially since they keep going up in price, but the consistency is worth it when I can save a step or two because of the paint formula.
