War Zone: Damocles - Kauyon Review

Warhammer 40,000 – I recently picked up the War Zone: Damocles box set of books. I've never really liked Tau that much and was going to pass on this supplement until I realized that there are some pretty good formations and data sheets for the Raven Guard and White Scars space marine chapters. As I play a variation on each of these from time to time I decided I better pick it up while it is current.

This format of book is new for Games Workshop and I hope they follow the format for future releases. One book is the narrative summary of the campaign in question and the other book details out the forces and gives additional rules for each one involved. It feels quite a bit like a smaller version of some of the Forgeworld Imperial Armour books. This is much more user friendly than the previous campaign supplements as you can just grab this book and the force you like and play.

The Raven Guard got some much needed love in this supplement. When the Space Marine Codex first came out I felt like they got the short end of the proverbial stick. The new formations give them rules that more accurately represent their fighting style and make it feasible to build a fluffy Raven Guard army that has some neat rules to make it play a little different.

Two of the formations allow you to choose the turn your Vanguard Vets come in and you can prevent them scattering when they deepstrike and assualt that turn. It looks like my sqaud of lightning claw vets that I built for the old Chapter Approved Raven Guard rules might see the table once more. I'm going to get a kick out of people picking them up and wondering why they are so heavy. (old terminator lightning claws). The other formation I like allows you to jump off the battle field back into reserves. I think this is a cool idea that might come in handy facing some forces.

The White Scars also got some neat formations that I'm looking forward to trying out. I will need to pick up some Scout Bikes. in order to play the one I want and so far they've been sold out locally.

You do get new Maelstrom Cards for the forces presented, I'm hoping they print hard copies of them as it's nice to have extras of the decks rather than trying to remember when to reference back to a page in then book.
