Cyclades - Fear the Wrath of the Gods

Board Games – With control/auction games you often get a mix of components. Many have meoples or wood blocks but more recently many have opted for molded plastic minis. Most of these games have tiny figures that look cool covering beautiful boards, but the solid color plastic takes you out of the immersive experience promised by the game.

Cyclades has 95 plastic “miniatures” that are unique to each faction. This fact alone is pretty impressive, having the “blue” faction look completely different than the “red” or “yellow” faction makes it easy to see where you are on the map. Sadly while the sculpts are unique and varied the quality is pretty poor. The monsters are really “derpy-looking” and no amount of paint can get around that. The warrior models are all pretty good, bendy weapons and all. The ships are all over the place, the sails are twisted and for some reason they opted to not have them all on a base so they look inconsistent. These little bummers take away from the otherwise impressive scope of the game.

To get these painted quickly I used a combination of traditional paint and Citadel’s contrast line to get some decent detail quickly. I kept the faction color prominent on the cloth and sails while making the rest of the figure look a bit more realistic. The monsters are a bit larger so they received a bit more attention but as I mentioned before the sculpt quality isn’t the best.
