Is it like Yatzee?

Board Games – Rome and Roll is a dice rolling game that has you build Rome. I’m still not sure why it has miniatures other than the fact they’re cool and represent characters in the game.

Here’s a summary:

Rome & Roll is a heavy roll-and-write board game by Dávid Turczi and Nick Shaw in which 1-4 players compete to craft an empire. Draft from a pool of custom dice to collect resources, construct the town, and organize armies. Political alliances, the colonies, and even the Gods all have a part to play. Imperii Gloria!

• Draft the dice to match your needs: roll, draw, and win!
• Play one of seven unique character classes, ranging from merchants to military leaders, with a wealth of different strategies to deploy.
• Take advantage of four possible scoring avenues: construct buildings, trade resources, conquer unruly colonies, and renovate the Roman road network.
• Make political alliances and call on the Gods.
• Raise armies and invade settlements as far afield as Egypt and Spain.
• Build roads and manage unruly provinces.”

Board Games – With control/auction games you often get a mix of components. Many have meoples or wood blocks but more recently many have opted for molded plastic minis. Most of these games have tiny figures that look cool covering beautiful boards, but the solid color plastic takes you out of the immersive experience promised by the game.

What Is Best In Life?

Board Games – The sword and sorcery genre began with Conan the Barbarian and his exploits in the pulp magazine Weird Tales, Marvel Comics began publishing his exploits in 1970 and everyone’s favorite action hero took on the roll in 1982. In 2016 Monolith released a board game base on Robert Howard’s original works.

Cosmic Colonies and Alien Frontiers Factions - Taking Space

Board Games – Resource management games typically use plastic or wooden cubes in various colors because they’re cheap and easy to produce. This is fine however when a game includes sculpted versions of these resources it takes the game to a new level. Cosmic Colonies is one such game.

From the manufacturer:

Asteroids blast through the cosmos, each one packed with possibilities. One may be your perfect new home, but it takes a stellar team to build a cosmic colony...

Cosmic Colonies is an orbit-drafting game of building a home in the stars. Players must leverage their workers' unique abilities to gather resources and construct new buildings while cleverly expanding their colonies. Each round brings new opportunities — and new talent. Your old workers will blast off to other players, while their workers orbit around to join your team!

Also in this group I painted up the various resource tokens for Alien Frontiers Factions. Three little power plants and a rover look much better with a little paint.

Mythic Battles – Atlas

Board Games – Atlas bears the weight of the world on his shoulders. Which might explain why he’s so grouchy looking. This model is an expansion set for Mythic Battles that adds another character.

I really like this take on the Giant, four-arms with a saddle on his back just adds character.

On the Painting Table: Zombicide - The Green Horde

Board Games – Nothing like starting the year off with a simple project. Last year I painted up several of the Zombicide: Black Plague sets. As with most games fo CMON this set is packed with a ton of miniatures (72 according to the box). The majority of those models are the zombie horde, but this set also includes some heroes and a siege engine.

Night at the Museum - Museum The Board Game

Museum_Boardgame_03.jpg

Board Games – These days it seems you can find a game to fit any interest you may have. If you like trains, farming, zoo keeping or any number of things you can find a board game based on that theme. The latest project to cross my painting desk are the player pawns for Museum a board game about collecting artifacts for … you guessed it a museum. The nice quality miniatures represent various artifacts from around the world much like the little pewter pieces in Monopoly players use these to move around the board.

One of the complaints I read about the player pieces is that they are not colored to match up with the player colors, which is honestly a silly complaint. The models are detailed enough to paint up and make them feel like real artifacts, which adds to the theme of the game.

Board Games – Conan has always been near and dear to my heart, as a kid I was a huge fan of Masters of the Universe, which lead to Conan, probably a little backwards but Pop Culture is a giant web that you might get caught on the edge of something and suddenly find yourself entangled deep in the center of it all. Conan has had a slight resurgence with Marvel’s anniversary and the reprinting of the old books as well as several miniature game kickstarters over the last few years.

From the Deep - A Lobotomy Expansion

Board Games – Pop Culture Icons/References trapped in an insane asylum trying to escape from other Pop Culture Icons/References seems to be the basis of Lobotomy the board game. I haven't actually played the game, but based on the large batches of minis I've painted for my client that's the general opinion I have about the game. The models are decent quality and plentiful which is usually a good enough reason to pick up a game. (Because if it's awful you can always repurpose the minis right?)
