Barbarians: The Invasion

Board Games – When I think of Barbarian Hordes rampaging across the land worker placement isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. However in Tabula Games’ Barbarians: The Invasion they make it work.

Each player uses their tribe to place various pieces on a 3D volcano board to gather resources and battle other tribes to become the greatest. Using worker placement you set up an economic engine to sustain your tribe until the end of the game where the player with the most points wins. No head to head battles here but more of a behind the scenes manipulation to come out on top.

The minis for this game are really nice. Each tribe has a number detailed banners as well as several unique sculpts to represent the various worker types. The models are a little smaller than a standard 28mm figure but seem to be well proportioned for their scale and have plenty of fairly crisp detail. The game has colored rings to denote player colors so you could paint these however you’d like.

To keep it consistent I painted each tribe with their player color mixed into the various shades of brown for the furs and bone elements. This is another project that I relied heavily on contrast paints applied over a pre-shaded base coat.

Also included in this batch is the Mystics Expansion which adds three more models to the game.
