Vindication: A Ruined Island Adventure

Board Games – Some games just look amazing, when the art and minis match up with great graphic design you get a really great looking game. Vindication is one of those games. Thrown overboard and left for dead you awaken on a ruined island where you must forge a new fate.

The miniatures included with this game are really nice representations of monsters and monuments that you can build over the course of a game. The detail is pretty crisp and they lend themselves to being easily painted.

Starting with a khaki base color and applying a heavy wash really brings out the detail and pre-shades the minis to make painting a breeze. I’ve been in love with the Citadel Contrast paints lately. Initially I was a huge skeptic because of the “special” primer that they recommend to base coat the minis. However after doing some experimentation I’ve come to realize following the recommended method is probably the worst way to use this line of paint.

When they first came out I followed the suggested method and was happy with the results. Granted it wasn’t a simple prime apply one heavy coat and you’re done to get there. But rather do that and then follow traditional techniques to bring the models up to a higher standard. I quickly realized that the cost per can of the special “primer” (which is actually more like a satin paint) compared to the coverage I got wasn’t going to work for me.

So over the course of the last year or so I’ve experimented with using the contrast line over regular gray primer, a combination zenithal priming technique as well as using it over a base layer of a color. The technique I’ve found most effective though is priming with my regular gray primer, applying a base color and heavy wash before using the contrast like a watercolor. I’m really happy with this method particularly on board game miniatures or my basic tier tabletop quality.
