Another Bug Hunt?

Board Games - Aliens seems to have had quite a few games in the market lately. This latest one to cross my table is Alien Bug Hunt by Upper Deck Games. From what I’ve been told the game is ok, but feels a bit like you’re stuck on rails based on the character you choose.

The info from the publisher doesn’t do much to elaborate on gameplay:

Your challenge in Aliens: Bug Hunt is to complete the mission and evacuate the complex because these xenomorphs converging from every direction are heartless, smart, relentless, and hungry.

Pick your favorite character from the movie Aliens, each with a unique ability. Every role is critical as players rely on each other to cover their six and make it out alive. The complex is comprised of thirty different location tiles to create different challenges. Private Hudson might ask whether this is a stand-up fight or just another bug hunt; the real question is who's hunting who?

Another Glorious Day In the Corp - Aliens

Board Games - I don’t know if it’s nostalgia or if the game is really that good, but this is the third complete set of Aliens: Another Glorious Day in The Corp that I’ve painted. I don’t mind because the miniatures are great and I’m a huge fan of the franchise.

Aliens - The Cute Version

Board Games – Gale Force 9’s Aliens game has been pretty popular with my clients, I think I’ve painted 2-3 sets at this point. From what I’ve read the game is very fun but has limited re-playability since it follows the events of the film very closely. I’ve heard the game is loosely based on an older game that’s very hard to track down by Leading Edge Games. One of my clients was able to track down not only original game but the expansion as well. Rather than use the cardboard standees that came with the game he’s going to use these really neat chibi-style mins.

Aliens - Another Glorious Day

Board Games – Many people were sad when the Alien vs. Predator game was canceled when Disney acquired Fox. While it’s a bummer that game went away having another company pick up the license is a very good thing.

AvP was a pretty overly complicated game that missed that sweet spot where fans of the series intersect with fans of boardgames. They tried to rectify that with the one-piece sculpts of the second edition but still had the issue with the average person doesn’t want to invest the time it takes to learn, build paint and play a tabletop miniatures game.

Another Glorious Day in the Corp mixes really nice screen-accurate miniatures with a simpler system that most people could pick-up and play fairly quickly. The hard plastic minis are color coded by faction as assembly is really simple with some plastic cement and clippers.

Not Stars Wars or Aliens - Starcadia Expansions

Board Games – CMON loves their kickstarters and they love parody stretch goals so much so that it’s become expected anytime they launch a new project. Nostalgia and Fandom are big motivators and for people that pass or miss the initial offering it can be super annoying trying to collect everything for a game they decide they love.

In Space No One Can Hear You Scream - AVP Second Edition

Board Games – Prodos Games has a pretty solid property. Aliens vs Predator remains a popular property regardless of the quality of the sequels, prequels and reboots. This year is the 40th anniversary of that lovable chest-bursting monster making it’s big screen debut, although with the current shake-up of Disney buying Fox, I wonder if they’ll make a big deal about the anniversary. Sadly it looks like the House of Mouse has killed all existing licensing deals so AVP goes out of print on May 1, if you’re a fan tracking down anything you don’t have now would be safer than waiting on clearance pricing to hit rock bottom.
