Warhammer 40,000 – Big Green Stompy Robots are ready to roll. With tournaments coming back I’m seeing quite a few clients prepping their lists for what they think will be the new ninth edition meta.
Warhammer 40,000 – I’ve been painting parts of the Space Marine army for a client for quite some time. He recently decided to pick up some iconography from Pop Goes the Monkey to finish off the green marines. I’m a big fan of how the white shark looks on the army green pad. I’m not sure what he’s going to call his chapter but they look great. Tournaments are being scheduled again so he’s sent over models that he needs for his GT list, this is the first batch.
Warhammer 40,000 – Chasing the meta can be a fickle thing. Particularly if you’re not actively playing in tournaments, since the “meta” for certain style events can be incredibly different than what’s going on in your own circle of players. For many of the competitive lists people try to emulate are built to play a very specific mission set.
Read MoreWarhammer 40,000 – Space Marines, you seem to hear about them no matter what you listen to or read - which in my opinion is a good thing. As the iconic army of Warhammer 40,000 it’s great to see them getting the bump in power and subsequent bump in popularity. While the internet may cry foul and lament the fact that their force doesn’t get the love … I am reaping the rewards with my own army and loving just as much as my clients.
This time my Raptor client has embraced the current meta and sent over some new models for his force. The Raptors if you are unfamiliar are a successor of the Raven Guard. They got a special character in the Badab War books that used to make bolters sniper rifles if they stood still. With the indexes Lias got extra sneaky and able to make up to three mini-marine units deep strike with him. The go-to choice for me was Veterans squads with combi-weapons. Fast forward to the Raven Guard supplement and you now have multiple ways to set up turn one charges with any unit in your book. Suddenly my client needed some new models.
Assault Centurions, Jump Pack Chaplain, Jump Pack Librarian, Smash Captain on Bike, Chaplain Venerable Dreadnought and some bolter sergents/sternguard round out this batch. Between Warlord traits, prayers, Psychic powers and stratagems there are multiple ways to put those Centurions in someones face turn one. Even more fun is casting Shadow Step to dump a character into their lines, oh look at that Chaplain Dreadnought is a character, guess he doesn’t have to worry about walking across the board. Mixing this batch in with what I’ve painted for him previously is going to make somebody sad.
Painting on these guys is pretty basic olive green, wash and several highlights to take them to a higher end tabletop finish.
Warhammer 40,000 – Space Marine Scouts, Devastators and Tactical Marines join the fight. This group will join the other groups of Raptors I've painted in my clients "all-infantry" Space Marine force. I think it's a cool idea and it will make full use of the Chapter Tactics and special rules available to the Raven Guard/Raptors.

Read MoreWarhammer 40,000 – It's always weird to me when a Chapter Tactic that has been traditionally overlooked suddenly becomes really good. With the Raptors successor chapter using their special character rules combined with their parent chapters tactics you have a very potent gunline or alpha strike with the best of them.
Read MoreWarhammer 40,000 – So I really liked what my initial Raptors list did on the table. It felt like the special forces style of play I was going for and the individual elements seem to have played their parts really well. As a 1v1 force that allows Forgeworld I look forward to playing that list.
Read MoreWarhammer 40,000 – Back in 2003 when I started the Twilight Ravens chapter they were based on the Chapter Approved Ravenguard rules. I did this because I loved the logo and the local meta was skewed toward Chaos Marines, so the idea of Marines that hit chaos on threes seemed like a good idea. Over time my chapter has evolved with the editions and now fits in the generic marine realm. I have models from the entire range and with a few tweaks of building a new model here or there I can build most anything I want to play. This means that since I devoted myself to marines as my primary army the Twilight Ravens haven't be shelved even if tactics and army builds changed with each edition. With eighth edition I want to do something different with my marines and until the codex comes out with chapter tactics (I really hope Forge World comes out with a pdf chapter tactics update to go along with the indexes) making do with the generic Index entries will have to do.
