Tenth Edition Additions - CSM and Space Marines

Warhamer 40,000 - Now that tenth edition is actually here and evolving as a system many players are looking to add some units to their existing forces. Terminators and Inceptors are solid choices to bring a bit more survivability to a force.

Getting Ready for 10th - Chaos Marines and Thousand Suns

Warhammer 40,000 - I’m really hoping that some version of soup makes it to the new edition of Warhammer 40,000. There are some armies that just love to be mixed with others like CSM and Daemons. It’s fluffy and I miss the days of old where you could summon a unit of daemons with an Icon or Spell.

I’m sure everyone has a bulk of new unpainted chaos stuff sitting around since many of the most recent updates made some unconsidered options viable. Sure it’s a little late in the game to be jumping on the new hotness but I’m guessing the revised unit cards are going to be similar to the Indexes of 8th edition where everything was pretty playable early on.

Word Bearers - The Blessed or Cursed?

Warhammer 40,000 - I really like the lore behind the Word Bearers, their role in the Horus Heresy is so well defined in the novels as the original bad guys. They show just how easily worship and faith can be twisted to evil deeds.

The newest models in the Chaos Space Marine line look so good. Possessed and Accursed Cultists really kick up the look of the line. It’s a bummer the models are single pose but with the current rules you probably aren’t taking more than a unit or two so it can be fixed with some light conversion work to get alternate poses if you want.

Maulerfiend - Word Bearers

Warhammer 40,000 - The Maulerfied is a weird model, built right out of the kit it has a really hunched appearance that makes it hard to appreciate the model. This particular one has a bit added to the base to make it look like it’s charging forward which lets you see the details of the model.

This is painted to match an existing Word Bearers force I’ve been painting for a while now and I’m really happy with the end result.

Chaos Space Marines - New Core Unit

Warhammer 40,000 – I’m a big fan of the new Chaos Space Marine codex, the updated rules really bring the various traitor legions to life with decent rules and a pretty expansive crusade section. One of my favorite updates is to the Legionary data sheet, getting access to a psyker in every unit and having a cool new melee weapon helps to bring new life to a pretty bland unit.

This unit is painted to match a basic level force that I painted up a few years back.

For those of you interested in the new Kill Team this unit is available as a Kill Team and in order to play the game you need to pick up these fancy measuring tools which I also painted up recently.

Taming the Primordial Ocean

Warhammer 40,000 – Thousand Sons are a tragic story of the best intentions going horribly wrong. These space marines fell during the Heresy because their Primarch was attempting to tattle on Horus and in the process messed up the Emperor’s great plan. As punishment their home planet was destroyed by the Space Wolves and the chapter was declared traitor.

This chapter has a very Egyptian flair which influences the color scheme and model line. While the models are amazing looking they’re a real pain to paint. Putting in the time to do it right is totally worth it though.

Chaos Furies

Warhammer 40,000 – For years the ugliest models in Games Workshops line up were the metal Chaos Furies. While they were always a good choice for a fast moving flying unit the models were just terrible and ugly. Thankfully they’ve recently rectified that with a nice plastic kit. While I still prefer some third party sculpts of harpies this new models are decent.

Lord of the Black Legion

Warhammer 40,000 – The newest Abaddon sculpt is pretty amazing. So much so that I’ve painted it several times, and each time I enjoy painting it. At some point the Chaos Marine book should see an update along the same lines as the loyal marine book to bring the evil side up to the same power level as the loyalists.

Black Legion on the Horizon

JM_BlackLegion_0321_03.jpg

Warhammer 40,000 – Black Legion is one of the more popular color schemes for Chaos Marines. It’s iconic and ties in with the big bad of the faction so most people who play Chaos Space Marines have at least toyed with the black and gold scheme.

This Vindicator and Maulerfiend are both part of a Black Legion force that I’ll probably be painting a little at a time. The scheme is the same as most of the other Black Legion models I’ve painted starting with a dark gray base and shading to get the black right with gold trim.

Is a Leadership Based List Viable? - Chaos in 8th

Is a Leadership Based List Viable? - Chaos in 8th

Warhammer 40,000 - Early in 8th edition I decided to do a Night Lords list, my idea was to do a ton of Raptors that messed with leadership to force my opponents to run away. Sadly with the rule of three spamming a ton of minimal Raptor units isn’t really viable. Another issue is that “assault troops” with a single base attack don’t really do well in assault, nor do small specialized units. While they’re vicious and great in combat in the lore and other background; in reality Raptors are a mobile firebase that can max out on special weapons.

Multipurpose Cultists

Multipurpose Cultists

Warhammer 40,000 – The ubiquitous Imperial Guardsman has been making his presence felt through out the 41st Millennium and in the last year has found his way into a variety of lists. The Imperium, Chaos and Tyranids can take advantage of the benefits this little guy and his friends bring to the table. So it only makes sense that I’m starting to see “multi-purpose “ guardsmen. Built from the Imperial Sprue, with some Genestealer Cult bits mixed in painted to match the colors of three other armies while remaining unique is my latest commission project.

Rotten Treats ... Death Guard with Renegade Knights

Rotten Treats ... Death Guard with Renegade Knights

Warhammer 40,000 – I love big events. They always turn into "brand-new" armies from my clients. The latest big event inspired list is for one of my Black Legion clients. He decided to add some Renegade Knights and Death Guard to his force. I jumped at the chance to do an alternate scheme Death Guard as the green/white, rotten green color scheme is everywhere right now. As with the Khorne elements I painted for him previously the god-specific helmet color is what sets them apart from the rest of the force.

Khorne on the Cob?

Khorne on the Cob?

Warhammer 40,000 – The Beta Rules and Faqs have put a damper on some of the more prevalent strategies for the Chaos Super-Faction. Soup is gone, Alpha-Strike is limited, and the Never-ending Cultist Bowl is a thing of the past. Things change so fast that some of the units my clients give me change in function before I finish painting them. With the FAQs dropping twice a year now it should be easier to anticipate what may or may not change.

Escalation Campaign - Session three, Week One

Warhammer 40,000 – I'm really happy with how my escalation league/campaign is going. For most of the last session I was play-testing a list I wanted to take to an event. Something came up however that means I won't be able to attend the event. That being the case I decided for this portion of the campaign to go another direction.

Escalation League – Week 3

Escalation League – Week 3

Warhammer 40,000 – This week I played another 2v1 game. Which meant I was running two complete 50PL armies, double what I had prepared for. Luckily with power level its super fast to build a list, I grabbed a Chaos Knight 24PL, a terminator sorcerer 6PL, a dark apostle 6PL and 4 units of cultists 3PL each. Quick and easier. whatever they're carrying is what they're armed with and I'm ready to play.

Night Lords – Nightmarish List 100PL/2000Pts

Night Lords – Nightmarish List 100PL/2000Pts

Warhammer 40,000 – As part of my resolutions for the new year I decided to pick a solid list for each of the factions I own and stick with it until I get the hang of what the list can do. At the end of seventh edition I dipped my toe back into the Chaos soup and started a Night Lords force that was supposed to be very focused on a few formations. While it did very well in the new edition those formations didn't translate so well. You can get a similar effect spending command points on stratagems and building your core force as an Outrider Detachment but it's not exactly the same.
