A detailed account of my various commission/hobby projects.
Board Games – Shadows of Brimstone Forgotten Army is another expansion that introduces some new enemies to the ever expanding game.
Board Games – Shadows of Brimstone is one of those games that keeps pumping out additional content. Some of the extra stuff are simple model or character boxes that add miniatures and some simple rules while others are big box expansions with a significant amount of extra content.
This batch of models include some prospector characters as well as a larger eldar being you might encounter in a cave.
Board Games – I’m sure I’ve said it before but Shadows of Brimstone reminds me of RIFTS/GURPS, in so much as it appears to be a mis-mash of any crazy thing you could imagine happening. I’ve painted aliens, cowboys, natives, crazy monsters and space stuff so it was no surprise when a dinosaur, rock people and rats made their way to my table.
I honestly have never played the game or read a ton about it, but the models are all decent quality hard plastic that have just enough detail to make painting quick and simple.
Board Games – Shadows of Brimstone reminds me an awful lot of RIFTS or GURPS, as a kid going into the comic shop/game store I’d see entire shelves dedicated to the myriad of expansions these open ended games systems offered up. Shadows of Brimstone has the same feel, in the course of painting the various sets I’ve painted cowboys, astronauts, mutant snakes, Native Americans, aliens, robots, and a variety of other monsters.
Read MoreBoard Games — I think I’m nearly done with all the Shadows of Brimstone monsters. This latest batch includes monsters form the Swamp expansion as well as some individual enemy packs.
Read MoreBoard Games – Shadows of Brimstone is a really weird game. I haven’t played it personally but one of my clients is all about it. I get a few models for the game in just about every batch she send over. Initially I was under the impression it was some type of cthulu-esqu cowboy game, which in the simplest terms i guess it is. The concept is a mining town the discovers a mysterious type of stone, the ensuing “gold-rush” causes an explosion that rips a hole in reality allowing for all sorts of oddities to appear. It feels a little bit like Rifts or any number of RPGs that throw in everything plus the kitchen sink.
This particular batch is the abandoned space station. Featuring undead astronats, probe droids and gun batteries it’s a well themed expansion.
Board Games – Shadows of Brimstone is quite the mishmash of things, initially it seemed like a Cowboy game with monsters but with each expansion it delves further into the weird. This latest set I painted reminds me a bit of Bosk from Star Wars or the Badoon from the Guardians of the Galaxy books. Space-faring lizardmen bounty hunters, kinda speaks for itself.
Board Games - Shadows of Brimstone is a game that just keeps on giving. The more of these expansion sets I paint the more I’m reminded of RIFTS or GURPS, it’s probably because the mismash of enemies I’ve seen run the full gambit of old west Indian to weird space robot suit back to giant mutant animals. At some point I need to get a demo of this game because while the minis aren’t the best quality, they’re decent and varied.
Read MoreBoard Games – Shadows of Brimstone is a treasure trove of miniatures, with so many expansions available you’e never starved for additional enemies or heroes. Every few months a few of these models find their way onto my painting table. The sculpts are pretty consistent, nothing overly detailed but just enough to look great with a little extra work.
Read MoreBoard Games – Shadows of Brimstone Indian Warriors. There’s really not much to say about these. They follow the same mold as the other expansions I’ve painted. One-two nice sculpts repeated to fill out a set. These are pretty much just enemies from what I can gather. I stuck with a simple paint scheme on these that I think works well. Cadian Fleshtone with a Reikland wash seems to be really close to the right skin color for Native Americans.
Read MoreBoardgames – Shadows of Brimstone is one of those games that can go anywhere. Initially I thought it was just an Old West style game but every commission I paint seems to go further than the last. Most recently I worked on a Flesh-Stalker and Flesh-Drones. This is one of the mini-expansions with a Boss Character and minions rather than one of the big box releases.
Read MoreBoard Games – Shadows of Brimstone (the chronically mispronounced game "Shadows over Brimstone") has a ton of expansions. Most recently I painted up the "Allies of the Old West" expansion. This added a few miners/outlaws, a black smith, pack mule and dog to my client's collection for the game.
Read MoreBoard Games - After wrapping up the monsters for Shadows of Brimstone, I had four heroes to get painted up. These are pretty standard western tropes: The Gambler, The Sheriff, The Saloon Girl and the Bandido.
Read MoreBoard Games - When it comes to board games with miniatures there are two – three distinct varieties. First is the pre-assembled or single piece miniature. These pass the "Christmas Morning Test" meaning you don't have to do anything other than open the box to get started playing. The second type are snap together, these models require a little assembly but not necessarily glue or filler to get them in a playable state. The last type requires some significant modeling, gluing and filling just like a standard tabletop miniature game. My current board game project, Shadows of Brimstone falls into that last category.
