My Favorite List

Malifaux – I've been playing this list for a few months now and have found it to be very consistent and quite a b1t of fun to play. For competitive Malifaux the sweet spot seems to 35 Soul Stone games, this gives just enough time to get in at least 4-5 turns (for slow players, experienced players will get the full 6-7) in an hour and a half or so. There is also a trend to using the shared strategies and having them be predetermined by the event organizer. Thankfully, most events retain the ability to change your list each round which is far to important an aspect of the game to abandon.

The list I've been playing is as follows:

Seamus

2 – Rotten Belles

1 – Crooked Man

2 – Necropunks

Killjoy

(7) Stones in Pool

The Basics
Your game plan remains basically the same regardless of the strategy you pull. Deploy the Necropunks as far forward as possible, when they activate move twice and cast leap. Depending on the table set up this should put them about 21" from your board edge. If they can't lock a model into melee, they should be positioned as a juicy target. (Note: avoid anything that has a "sacrifice" ability, it prevents slow to die and ruins the plan) Ideally your opponent will have to spend a minimum of 2 AP to kill the Necropunk. With your Slow to Die action you summon Killjoy. Who should be right in the middle of your opponents crew. The odds are he will die, but in the process he should be able to kill one model and put a serious hurt on another. You should get a minimum of 2 turns forcing your opponent to deal with the rampaging beast in their backfield.

Every model in this list has Slow to Die, you should only summon Killjoy on your own turn if it is the end of turn 3 and your opponent hasn't killed anything yet.

The rest of the list is about board control. The Crooked Man should be moving toward objectives and casting Shafted as many times as he is able. The Belles should be used to screen Seamus and protect him from getting engaged in melee. Each turn the Belles should be moving and only casting Lure to set up a shot for Seamus or Distract to limit the AP of threats.

The Other Stuff
If I'm playing this list competitively I'll ALWAYS take Bodyguard and Hold-Out as my schemes. The reason being these are the easiest to accomplish and if things aren't going your way it's easy to run Seamus back towards his deployment zone to protect it. As long as you're able to prevent your opponent from getting their strategy or denying their schemes you'll at least tie.

Seamus is pretty terrible in melee and should avoid it at all costs. I've found that his (3) AP are best spent maneuvering around to protect himself and/or take a shot when he can. Most of the time taking a shot results in a corpse which you should then attempt to cast Arise My Sweet on. His other spells are tempting but situational at best. It's far more important to keep him safe so that .50 cal can do it's job.

As I said I've been playing this same list for a few months against a variety of opponents, and even when they know EXACTLY what you're going to do they will still react similarly to your plays. If they don't deal with the Necropunks they'll tie up a model and slowly grind it away until it becomes necessary to sacrifice and summon Killjoy. The Shafted Markers the Crooked Man can pump out will dictate where your opponent will move as the 2/54 chance of losing a model is a pretty scary proposition.

RIW Tournament Update – Sharing the Love

I just finished up designing the pins that will be awarded at the Feb 5th event I'm hosting as RIW Hobbies in Livonia. I think they're a fun play on the "I Love New York" logo. From my experience players enjoy having some type of take-away that says they won an event. So I try to create a unique pin for each event I run.

The pins are created by printing this pdf onto inkjet shrinky-dink paper. Once the pins have been shrunk I attach pinbacks (you can get these at any arts and crafts store) and seal them with an acrylic spray.

Save the Date – Feb 5, 2011

Since this is a Valetine's Day Themed event, there will be a special rule in effect for the entire day.

Each board will have a fixed strategy and special event/terrain.

At the beginning of each round the TO will flip a card from the top of a deck. If the card is a heart/ram or a joker than the following rule will be in effect for the duration of the round.

Love is in the Air

Models attacking a model of the opposite sex receive a negative twist on CB duels, models attacking a model of the same sex receive a positive twist on CB duels. Constructs are sexless and neither rule applies to them.

On the Painting Table...

TE_paintingtable1282010.jpg

Malifaux – Finally getting back in the swing of things a working on some new commissions. On the table we have an Executioner, Electrical Creation, Enslaved Nephimlim, Purifying Flame and Scales of Justice.

Assembling the Scales of Justice is a huge pain. The next time I put one together I'll glue the pans to the chain first. I didn't do that this time and had to hold the pans in place until it dried (I don't use accelerant because it weakens the bond). Once you get around the difficulties of assembly it's a really cool model.

I think this is the third or forth Electrical Creation I've assembled and painted. At this point I've gotten really good at getting the electricity arcs to quickly bond. The bag/tentacles are still weird no matter how many times I paint them but with a bit of work you can highlight them so they look more like a torn bag and less like fleshy tentacles.

Painting fire is one of my least favorite things, mostly because getting it to look remotely realistic is a tedious affair. I've found working with a light yellow and layering up various shades of yellow, orange and red is most effective. Then to smooth the transitions I wash with a yellow or orange ink.

I dread painting the flesh of the executioner. My biggest issue with the model is the large smooth belly. I've seen many variations that add hair or tattoos to break up the area, but most of those techniques are more time consuming than I'm willing to do on a table top quality piece. With a bit of layering you can get a nice finish however. I really wish that if Wyrd does an alternate sculpt of the model that it include sculpted hair.

The Nephilim is really simple and the amount of detail on the model makes it easy to quickly accomplish a nice tabletop finish. For the flesh I used an Ivory color washed with Ogryn Flesh and then highlighted with the same color. I think this is the easiest way to paint pale otherworldly flesh. I'll probably do a light purple wash to make the flesh of the torn wings look bruised.

Team Seamus

Adding to my ever expanding wardrobe of gaming gear is a football jersey. Every few years I create a new jersey for my fantasy football league. In the past I've had a Cryx Jersey and Black Legion Jersey made. In honor of my current gaming addiction I've had a Resurrectionist Jersey made.

The font is an outlined version of "Blood Crow" which doesn't seamlessly translate to applique very well. I really like how it turned out and it's a nice change from my standard black. It's tricky ordering blank jerseys from uniform suppliers because the ones that are meant to be actual uniforms don't really fit well without pads and they tend to have a large steel-mesh grid rather than the standard dazzle material. Which means if you get that you'll need a t-shirt under it.

In other news I'll be starting a big project after I wrap up the game room renovation. It's inspired by this project. So I'll be posting step by steps once I begin.

10/23 Malifaux Lotto Tournament

Malifaux – RIW Hobbies held a unique Malifaux Tournament on Oct 23. The event was a standard 35 SS scrap with three rounds. The unique part was the big prizes were given out via a lottery system, which resulted in a fun casual feeling event.

I ran three different Res. lists over the course of the day and had a blast at the event. My daughter came with me and took photos throughout the day. I plan on doing some write-ups for the games I played check back in the battle reports section for updates.

Wrapping up

Malifaux – I just finished up some new terrain pieces for a commission. The client wanted some of the special terrain features that are listed in the book. He currently has a Badlands/Frontier Town layout and needed the pieces to match a dark earth board.

The Soulstone Vein was created by sculpting the vein with a 2 part epoxy applied over a textured wallpaper. While the fluff says Soulstones are a milky white color, I prefer to do a glowing green color so it stands out on the table better.

The mysterious effigies were sculpted using a 2 part epoxy and look similar to the Ancient Monument. In my mind the Tyrant Entities are like eldritch demons, so I tried to create something that would represent that. In the same vein the Magical Nexus was built to look like a summoning circle. Using standing stones to indicate a potent magical space.

The scrap pile and graveyard are on CD bases and were created using casts from Hirst molds and some other pieces I had lying around.

I also finished the Victoria crew for the same client. You can see the full crew in the gallery section. Overall I'm happy with the way they turned out. For tabletop quality I think they look very nice.

I kept with a limited color pallet to make the models look like they belong together on the tabletop. Oddly enough green, orange and red look really sharp when tied together as in this crew. The legs of the Sword Vic are a bit strange, at first glance it seems like she's wearing stockings but looking closer it's more of a thigh-high boot.

Interview – Dave "nerdelemental" Bowen

I recently had the chance to interivew Dave "nerdelemental" Bowen. Dave is part of our local group and also is one of the writers/developers on Malifaux: Rising Powers.

TE: What's your role with Wyrd Miniatures? How did you get involved with Malifaux?

Dave: It’s ever evolving! Mostly “piss-boy” for Nathan and Eric. It started back at Gencon 2008 when I met Nathan and talked his ear off about the models on display and the ideas he could share about the upcoming game and plans for it. I shared my interest in the world he had envisioned and the plans Eric had for the gameplay. I was intrigued and enthused and let them know that I wanted to participate. I became a very vocal playtester, determined to end up with a game that I’d enjoy playing for years. With enough pestering, they eventually shoved me into the Development Team so they could more comfortably tell me to shut up whenever I got on their nerves. Now I’m in the development of rules, do a considerable amount on the editing side, and devote a tremendous amount of time as a part of the writing team.

TE: Were you the head writer? How much influence did you have on the story?

Dave: That’s a tricky question to answer. We don’t have a “head” or “lead” writer moniker anymore. Nathan’s the head of the writing department and he consults with every writer about the vision that person is writing about. Every plot idea goes through him. Sometimes I had what I thought was the coolest and best idea in the world and then Nathan will shoot it down.  Like killing Perdita seemed like a totally cool idea to me! He said no.

However, once I got my voice and vision aligned better with his there’s a lot of trust and leeway and he’ll loosen the reins and say, “Write it up. Let’s see how it looks on paper.” Once the project was in my lap it became clear that the world, itself, has so many story paths that want to be talked about that it almost drives itself. Since my mind’s a full step ahead of what the general populace has regarding the fluff fiction, it cracks me up when I read on our forums “I don’t think undead beasts work with Marcus thematically so I’m not going to do it,” and I think “What are they talking about? Marcus would have no trouble because of this…” and I forget that not many people know what’s in the planning for the future. I’m already writing the story for Book IV so I have to be careful because I’m providing answers in my writing for questions everyone else haven’t even thought of yet.

TE: Is "Rising Powers" focused primarily on the new masters? Do any of the masters that didn't get much love in Book 1 featured (ie Nicodem, Marcus etc.)?

Dave: Of course. There’s a need to shed the spotlight on every master, to give them some validity in the world. But, there’s also the story that must be told, too. Book I had a lot of attention on Seamus and Rasputina and the camera shifted off of them for Book II: Rising Powers, but they’re surely integral to this first story arc and the attention will have to come back to them. But, it’s not hard to list the masters that haven’t been given much attention and expect more stories to wrap around them. Marcus, McMourning, Lady Justice, Pandora, etc.. They’ll see more face time as the full story unfolds. Even the fluff of RP isn’t entirely on the new masters, either. Sonnia is strongly present as she prepares to do whatever she’s planning, as is Perdita. Nicodem has a lot of attention and Ramos is in and out as a string puller. You’ll also see a lot more development of secondary characters like Gideon as a Desperate Mercenary and Lucius, the Governor’s Secretary, and the Governor General, himself.

TE: What happened with the TerraClips Product? From the GenCon Coverage it looked like a solid product.

Dave: It is a solid product. Even as it is right now there was a lot of interest in it and many people at Gencon expressed an interest in buying it as it exists. However, Wyrd’s standards are high and the Partners made the call that several aspects of the product were simply below their standards and expectations and they’d rather fix them, increase the value of the product, and then get it to consumers to make them even happier. As for “what’s wrong with them”? You’d be hard pressed to identify the problems yourself – suffice it to say that in less than a couple of months an even better package will be available! Now that Book II is out, it’s clear that I need several of the “Building” kits as I have my mind set on working up Colette’s Star Theater with them. I’ll make tiny tables and the whole deal.

TE: What can we expect in the future for the Malifaux story line? Is there an outline for where things are going or are you playing it by ear?

Dave: Well, at Gencon Eric and I did some brainstorming and talking and Nathan and I have spoken at great length on a more formal outline: of Book IV!  So, yeah, we’re forward thinking rather than whipping it from the hip. However, as we write, new ideas come and we talk again and tweak the story, go back and rebuild what we did before, that sort of thing. The outline is living, though, and the difficulty is keeping the story, concept art, and model stats aligned throughout the process as those things are living, too. For example, we’ll discuss how we think something looks and I write it up, then the stats change, giving it some twist that needs rewriting, then the artwork comes in and Nathan may request changes and pretty soon I have to go back several chapters to revise something because it’s changed in several ways. Because the fiction is by far the most time consuming aspect of a book we have to try to get some down before stats are even out of the alpha stage. Now, what can you expect for the story line? As the game is very unique and introduced an entirely new mechanic, I hope the story can match that. I don’t want the typical “Here’s the master of this chapter and he’s fighting this other master and crew” kind of storytelling. We’re pushing for real people in phenomenal circumstances that Fate has twisted for them and see how they rattle. I’m no Poe or Faulkner but keeping the story character driven is much more important for us than one battle scene after another. Of course they’re in there and fun to write – hopefully they’re the fun breaks between the true story. I’m hoping for some unexpected unions and allies and some conflict between individuals we might have thought were tight. Some of that was introduced with Sonnia and the Ortegas in RP and Rasputina probably ticked off Ramos quite a bit by doing what she did to those miners while up in the mountain. We’re going to explore a lot more of the character’s motivations and conflicts.

Ultimately, I develop a storyline plot structure and then Nathan gives various thumbs up and thumbs down to different ideas and we talk for a long time about it and he throws ideas around like crazy. My favorite part of the writing process is the “talking with Nathan” stage! When I write, my mind’s still on him. I want to surprise him with something. If I can get him to react then I know the rest of the readers will. And Book IV has some chapters that caused him to respond immediately so I think we’re getting the job done! I can’t wait for it to drop. I can’t write fast enough.

TE: Can we expect a new book each year at GenCon?

Dave: That’s not a call for me to make. So far that sure seems like our track record, though, doesn’t it?

TE: Can you tell us anything about this Puppet Wars that's mentioned on the plastic card deck box?

Dave: No. However, it’s not terribly hard to imagine. We have a deck of cards that says it can be used with Malifaux as well as the Puppet Wars game. We had puppet figures on display that sure resemble the real figures used in the Malifaux game. I’ll let the masses speculate what the game will actually be.

TE: What's it like to work with Nathan and Eric?

Dave: They’re slave drivers! That’s not much of an exaggeration but they’re both totally cool. Each will simply get the job done himself and both rarely ask for much from anyone. However, there’s a ton of work to get done and they appreciate forward thinkers and self-starters. You’ve got to be independent to stand a chance in this industry. They’re both visionaries of a high caliber and together they see things on a grand scale. We all debate and get attached to something in our projects, but they appreciate other’s visions even if they don’t agree with them. Emotions might run high as tension mounts and we playfully taunt and call names, but there’s a tremendous amount of respect they grant the people that step up to the plate for them.

TE: Are you going to start your own Twitter Feed?

Dave: Ghah. I hope not. Not unless they make me. That thing’s the voice of Satan or something. However, in the vein I think you’re asking: I have a plan that’s on the table to bring you more updates about the fictional world in a more timely manner. However, as you can guess, there’s a tremendous amount of projects we all have stuck on the end of a stick that’s getting hot in the fire. Honestly, you really couldn’t imagine the number of ideas we’ve generated about new material, content, new games, and supplements. Wyrd’s a small company with colossal ideas. I hope I can influence the story enough to get more out into the public. We’ve even come up with a clever experiment I hope to initiate that will allow our fans to get involved in a story arc and have them drive the direction it goes. I’d love to get that going soon.

TE: What other games do you play? Do you draw any influence from them?

Dave: I used to play a lot of games and still have interest in many. I barely have time to play this one right now, though. Privateer Press games, Dark Age, and I’d like to dabble in some other really impressive looking games that have been on my radar for years. Gencon is awesome for driving up a person’s interest when you see them in person. Helldorado and WarGods of Aegyptus look interesting. Drawing influence isn’t quite how we steal from everyone else, though. What’s more common is that we consider the games we like and specifically say, “I hate this aspect of this game that I otherwise enjoy” and make sure we push that game element in the trash heap for our game. It’s hard to make a perfect game, but we’re making one that we enjoy, with little that we dislike in a miniature game.

TE: What's your favorite faction?

Dave: That’s a hard question. I literally play them all. When I put them on the table, I guess I have the most fun playing Neverborn. Pandora, specifically. But I like the trickery of a good Viktoria list, too. Crews with complex interactions make me happiest to play from any faction. The fiction is far different, though. Faction isn’t as important as much as rich backgrounds and open-ended story possibilities. I rarely play Resurrectionist crews (to be changed now that I have the Kirai crew!) but I’m very drawn to their stories in the fluff. Odd paradox in my interest. Kirai became very interesting to me because she was so young, so vulnerable, and at the same time driven by rage and a thirst for vengeance. She had to overcome her own self-pity to turn it into that driving hatred. Even Nicodem tried to manipulate her and she came out on the other side, ignoring his drive to connect that punk zombie with one of her spirits and she played along just to learn what he had to offer. That’s a cool character.

Lady Justice, however, seems a bit flat. I’m working out some angles to make her more appealing to me – maybe more dark and brooding like our version of Wolverine or Bruce Wayne. Mostly I just dropped a big building on her to get her out of the way. If you don’t like writing the character, just kill ‘em off! That’s my motto. Nathan tells me I have to quit trying to kill all of the Book I masters but I think I’ve got him worn down where maybe he’ll let me truly get one in the grave.

TE: Will any other characters make the move to master? In a related question why is Hamlin on a 50mm base?

Dave: Never say never! We’re consciously not going to get ourselves stuck in a place where there’s no growth, I can promise that. I think we could potentially see a master change, entirely, too. New stats for the same character name, that sort of thing. As the characters evolve in the story, their stats may change to reflect that evolution. I think it’s clear that we’re not shy about presenting a change no matter how jarring it might seem at the beginning. We want to make as many innovative changes as possible to keep everyone on their toes: from the use of cards as the key game mechanic to completely devouring a character in the Necropolis only to see him rise as one of the vessel of an ancient Tyrant entity. Eric loves to push the envelope and if he can envision something in his mind he’ll work out stats for the thing and then the rest of the Development Team will tell him it won’t work. He’ll still send it to the playtesters and several months later it’ll be getting ready for the book. Nothing’s ever off limits unless it’s a simple creature you could find in every Monster Manual since 1977. Everything else is fair to consider.

Hamelin on 50mm? Nix. The dog’s on a leash. He needs room to move about. The Hamelin the Plagued model, though, doesn’t need Nix on a leash. So they’re separate models and each has their own appropriately sized base. That’s really your only question about models? We’re doing awesome!

TE: Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Dave: Casey J. says I use the word “upon” so much that it’s pervasive and…what did she call it?... “almost pathological” I think she said. Maybe there should be a drinking game where you have to take a shot whenever you see the word “upon” in the writing. She tried her damnedest to clean it up for me but I found one sentence that has two “upons” in it!

Also, keep in mind that we have a real writing team on Rising Powers. There are several others that made substantial contributions to the fiction. It’s all really solid if you ask me. The Arcanist introduction story is super fun for me to read and I had nothing to do with it! We’re going to see the contributions from some of these guys more and more, I’m sure.

Metro Malifaux League Wrap Up

The league was a success. Overall I think allowing people to chose their opponents and take an average for the games played was the biggest draw for this league. It kept things feeling very casual while keeping a competitive environment. Tuesday we'll be having some tiebreaker games and then the awards.

Basically the way the league worked was:

Players chose their opponents and must play one game per week and can play a maximum of three games per week. A win is worth 3 VP, Tie 2 VP and Loss 1VP. The total number of VP players earn is averaged with the number of games played to determine each week's score.

After five weeks the winner's are determined. In the event of a tie the total Encounter VP's are used for the tie-breaker. If the players who are tied agree, there will instead be a tiebreaker game during the award week.

If you're interested here's the weekly strategies:

Seamus gets Spiritual

Narrative Battle Report
by Josh Powers [jmp_mydog]

“Bloody Hell, these were new boots,” Seamus exclaimed as he trudged through the swampy bog. Reflecting on the events that put him here.

During the last his last visit to Nicodem’s new Observatory, the undertaker’s newest pupil shared the secrets of bending the wills of spirits to follow the orders of a master. At first the hatter scoffed at the idea, but after seeing them in action he reluctantly conceded their usefulness. With Molly and Sybil running another errand he brought some of the restless spirits with him for this errand.

The hissing and screeching of the harpies abruptly jarred him from his thoughts. The gardener called these creatures Shikome. Apparently they’re soul hunters, and for this little mission they should be most useful. Flocking around them were several bat-like apparitions, commonly referred to as Night Terrors, these particular beasts seem to have an affinity for the Shikome.

“Well now my sweets, that blind whore is out here somewhere. I need you to track her down and do your worst.” The beauty of these spirits is while they suck the life from their victims they leave the body unscathed, making resurrection last a bit longer.

With a screech the Shikome and Terrors launched into the air scanning the swamp for signs of their prey. The hatter trudged off through the bog keeping an eye to the sky for a sign they’ve found his nemesis. Silently following behind was a hungry ghost, these Gaki are drawn to the living hoping to feast upon their flesh.

As he burst into a clearing, gunshots rang out. The Terrors had found some prey. Getting a better look, it appeared they had scared one of the Ortegas from his hiding place. Suddenly a crash a hiss of steam burst from the underbrush...a peacekeeper. “Isn’t this just my luck, since when do they send that mechanical beastie out in the swamp. Well I guess that’s my que.” and he ducked back behind a ramshackle structure.

A vengeful spirit, draw to the energy manifested appeared and lashed out at the construct. It’s ghostly claws tearing rents into the side of its carapace. The constructs massive arms lashed out and briefly disrupted the Onryo’s hold on this world. With a shriek it vanished passing through the body of Samuel Hopkins, as he stepped out from behind another shed.

“It seems I must do everything myself,” Seamus sighed as he cocked the hammer of his .50 cal, and unloaded into the construct. The massive boom of the hand cannon was shortly followed by a larger explosion as the boiler tanks ruptured and the Peacekeeper collapsed into the bog. Giggling hysterically the hatter then turned his attention to the squawking harpies, who were swooping and diving behind the shed Hopkins just stumble from.

“Excellent, my sweets. That’s right let’s end this whore once and for all. What the hell...?” Seamus exclaimed as a giant bird tore into his shoulder. Crouching down the hatter scanned the area to see where the flying vermin came from. A rustle in the underbrush gave away the unseen assailants position. “Well now no need to be hiding their, Bukko. Come out an play nice.” Reloading his flintlock Seamus closed the distance between himself and the cowardly bushwhacker.

A shot rang out, knocking Seamus’ hat from his head. “I don’t have time for this, why don’t you go away.” he ordered, firing his hand cannon in the direction of the shot. Santiago collapsed as his shoulder exploded in a shower of gore. Unseen from the shadows the Gaki leapt onto the wounded gunfighter and began to gorge.

Behind the shed, Lady Justice is swarmed by the vicious harpies. She swings here sword and tries valiantly to dispatch the apparitions, but her efforts are for not. The poisonous claws rake her face and tear at her body. Through shear brute force she is able to sever the ties that hold one of the soul-hunters to this world, but the poison takes it’s toll and the other beast is able to bring her down. Silently she collapses into the murky water.

“Well now, what have we here. Looks like the gardener might be onto something. Shoo now, I need the body, she going to make quiet the beautiful flower, yes ... yes she will.” Wiping the Austringers blood from his hands he gathered up the still warm corpse of the sword mistress and headed back to the city proper.

The DISCOVERY

By B. Ellsworth [paperbagfox]

The trees were whipping past Lilith’s face as she ran through the forest trying to get as far away from the streets of Malifaux as possible. After the close encounters that took place during the night before, Lilith was in no mood to push their luck more then needed. But the ugly truth about Malifaux is that no matter what there is always something or someone out there that is looking for a fight. There was strange feeling that came over Lilith, and the feeling was the type of sensation that today would prove to be the same. Not looking forward to finding out what exactly brought on the feeling, Lilith pushed on through the trees.

As Lilith ventured on through the forest a glimmer caught her eye off in the distance. Curiosity got the better of her as Lilith and her minions set a new course toward the flicker of light in the brush of the woods. As Lilith and her followers got closer to their new destination, a sudden noise on their side made them come to an abrupt stop. Feeling like they were on the verge of a trap, Lilith and her crew fanned out in order to not allow the unknown attackers easy pray. And then in a small opening just on the other side of the source of the distraction appeared Kaeris, the new henchman for the Arcanists. Lilith’s eyes widened as Kaeris ignited a flame and sent the burst in the direction of both Lilith and the mature Nephilim.

Lilith was able to dive out of the path of the flame just in time. Hitting the ground Lilith turned to watch the mature get hit in the chest with the burst. The mature quickly put out the fire that ignited on his clothing and to assess the damage from the attack. Now knowing what group is involved in the attack, Lilith got to her feet and prepared herself for the battle that was about to begin. Sensing Kaeris was taking aim on him again, the mature took flight through the trees to where Kaeris could not see him.

Having seen the attack on the mature, the young Nephilim wanted to take matters into his own claws and show both Lilith and the mature that he can carry his own weight. Gauging where the flame burst came from, the young charged head strong into battle. The young was able to land two strikes on Kaeris, but was unable to bring down the filthy fire breather. As soon as the second blow landed on the scum, there was reselling came from the shrubs near by. The reselling can from a group of steampunk arachnids rushing toward the fight. Once they reached the battle the little arachnids latched onto the young and started ripping him apart.

Black blood was flying everywhere, landing on the arachnids as well as Kaeris. Kaeris already being weakened from the young was not able to withstand the power of the young’s blood and fell lifeless to the ground. Lilith seeing this take place hurried to aid the young but was not fast enough to help her baby. The pain in Lilith’s chest grew with every step toward the pack of arachnids that by the time she reached them the lust for revenge was too strong. One swing of the greatsword sent one arachnid smashing into a nearby tree, followed by a downward strike splitting another in half. The last arachnid tried to attach itself to Lilith but was set off into the vast forest by a swing from the greatsword.

The mature was watching as Lilith dismantled the swarm of arachnids like little play toys; when movement near Lilith drew the attention form the perched Nephilim. Paying close attention to the area where the movement came from, the Nephilim watched as two guns raised and took aim at Lilith. Fearing for his mother the mature dove to attack the unknown gunman. To his surprise the gunman turned out to be the Convict Gunslinger and started to tear into the coward. The Convict was an easy treat for the mature to sharpen his claws on. With his limbs flying the mature could sense pride coming from Lilith behind him.

Lilith turned back to the original source of their distraction and started to walk to the brush where the glow was coming from. Using her greatsword to pull back the brush find out what was so important to the Arcanists. The source of the glow was non other then a soul stone vein that looked like it would be able to provide power for an extensive amount of time. Sensing the potential power that the vein could produce, Lilith stated to mine the vein for all its worth. While she was gathering the stones, Lilith could hear noise coming from behind her, the sound was that of breaking wood. Lilith noticed a large wagon wheel go flying through the trees and knew that the scum were near.

Feeling the urge to get out of the woods as soon as she can, Lilith grabbed the newly gathered soul stones and called out to her loves. Sensing the minions heard her Lilith stated moving out of the forest with her crew in toe. Once she made it to a clearing, Lilith turned to allow her loves to catch up and form a new plan. To her surprise the only followers to make it to the clearing was the Doppelganger and two tots. With a heavy heart Lilith forged on with the soul stones slung over her back and the diminished crew in line, hoping that there would not be any more surprises in the future for her and her crew …

Metro Malifaux League Week 3

The PLAY DATE

By B. Ellsworth [paperbagfox]

Meanwhile up in the mountains daybreak was fast approaching as Zoraida, a Doppelganger and a horde of terror tots where looking forward to a day of fun around the train tracks. Now the Neverborn’s way of fun is like no other, on this day the tots decided to bring out the explosives. Zoraida and the Doppelganger wanted to tag along and offer help to the tots as well as making sure that nothing horrible happens to them. The last thing the Neverborn need is to have Lilith go off on a blood rage over her slain babies. While paying close attention to the tots, a strange sensation came over Zoraida and shook her to her core.

The shiver down Zoraida’s spine forced her to look deeper and discover the source of the disturbance. She was not surprised when the source turned out to be the Guild itself. Zoraida wanting to know what is in store from the Guild, she looked closer and discovered that it was non other then Lady J, the Judge, the Executioner, Santiago Ortega, the Convict Gunslinger and two Death Marshals. Not wanting to allow the tots to have all the fun, Zoraida stated to rummage through her bag of dolls looking for someone to play with. The search did not take long, due to the size of the doll, as she pulled out the fat little doll of the Executioner.

As the tots ran off to play with their toys, Zoraida started to force her will on the Executioner by making him obey her every demand. Her first demand of the big man was to have him make a strike against Santiago, and the paired claws did what they were meant to do and put a hurt on Santiago. Not knowing why the Executioner was attacking him, Santiago took off in the other direction around the train. As Zoraida watched this happen she could not help cracking a small smile at the confusion of the Guild. But that smile quickly faded as she watched Lady J and the rest of her dysfunctional followers start making their way toward her hiding place behind the rocks.

Knowing that the Guild scum would be on top of her rocky hiding place, Zoraida made one more controlling prick of the little fat doll in her hand with her pin. Zoraida made the real life copy of her doll chase after Santiago but was not in range to inflict any damage on the already wounded Ortega. As much enjoyment as Zoraida was having she knew that tots were off have fun of their own. But also knew that their type of fun can get them in trouble and with Santiago and the Executioner heading that way, she needed to start heading back for support. With the stench of the Guild bearing down on her, Zoraida pulled out her spell book and case Raven to allow her to fly away from the immediate danger.

Once out of danger, Zoraida checked in with the rest of the crew finding out that she was too late to save a tot from Santiago. In the distance Zoraida could see that the Doppelganger decided to take revenge for the fallen tot into her own hands by copying Santiago. The Doppelganger took sights with the copied Peacebringers and fired into Santiago, dropping the Ortega with out a second glance. Sensing an on coming attack Zoraida looked around just in time to see the once controlled Executioner thumping toward the Doppelganger with claws ready to kill. Zoraida could not look away from what was on the verge of happing as the bright sun was slowing climbing in the sky.

The battle was fast and bloody as the Executioner collided with the Doppelganger. The Executioner struck first but was unable to bring her down with his mighty claws. While the Doppelganger mimicked the attacks of the Executioner’s claws hitting the large target, but was unable to bring him lifeless to the ground. That opening left by the Doppelganger was all the Executioner needed to make a quick strike that brought her down in a hurry. Zoraida could feel the strength in the Executioner rising with the lifeless body lying at his feet and needed to gather the forces and get out of the area as soon as they could.

Relaying the message to the tots that it was time to get out of the area, Zoraida was paying close attention to the Guild movements in the distance. The tots had a other agenda on mind and ignored what the hag was trying to explain to them, and ran off over the tracks to set the other explosives in their string of noisemakers. Little did they know that there was a Death Marshal and the Gunslinger on the other side of the train waiting for them. Even though the tots were able to set the bombs, they did take two casualties in the process. As soon as the tots turned around to head back to the hag the Gunslinger and the Marshal were quick to engaged them, with what looked like no way to escape.

Sensing that the misbehaving tots were in trouble and the Executioner closing in on the remaining tots, Zoraida was quickly look for a way out of the mess they were in. Her answer came in the form of a large blast off in the distance, and then another closer then the first. Knowing that this was the distraction she was looking for Zoraida called out to the tots tell them to make a run for the forest at the base of the mountain. The third blast came close to the train, sensing the tots heard her and seeing the group of tots closest to her take off down the hill, Zoraida reopened her spells for her Raven spell and took off after the tots. In the background Zoraida heard the last two explosions and the noise from the last tots sprinting through the rocks.

Knowing that today they were lucky, Zoraida and the tots continued their escape from the Guild. In the back of Zoradia’s mind the thought of some luck is better then no luck, and the day will come when the Guild will loss out on their luck. The feeling that came over Zoraida at the thought of hope that on that day the Neverborn will be there to take advantage and exterminate the slime once and for all …

On the painting table...

Malifaux – I just began a new commission for a Victoria crew. My client needs to have them for a tournament on Oct. 8th, so it's going to be a tight turnaround. Since he requested tabletop quality, I began as I usually do. The first step is to block in the base colors of the models. For typical caucasian flesh this means a dark flesh color as the base. When painting models a good tip is to "dress" them, start with the flesh then put the clothes on. After basing the flesh I then will block in the colors of the models. Then block in the colors of the base.

For this job, the client wants them to look like colorful individuals. Knowing that these are all mercs and having painted other models for him I decided to share a few of the colors across the board. This way they still look like individuals, but when on the tabletop they should feel cohesive.

After blocking in the orange, green, red, khaki and metallics I washed the models with a light Devlin mud wash. I've found this gives a basic level of shading to most colors as well as giving a "road-weary" feel to the model. It also picks out all the details and does a bit of "black-lining" to make things pop. I prefer a brownish color for this rather than black because in nature you never see black outlines, its always a shade of gray or brown.

The next steps are to go back and do basic highlights with the base colors, pick out the details, and then do a final highlight, and than do any individual color washes to smooth the transitions out. I'll try to post more of a step-by step process for these models, as I progress.

Leviticus Tactics

This special guest tactics article was written by our local Leveticus player, Rob [Phoenix on the Wyrd Boards]. I've been thinking about painting up a Levi list to make use of all my Res models and asked him to provide some tactics.

Rob is a very skilled player and has won several large events in both Malifaux and Warmachine, including several of the Gencon Events.

Spells & Their Uses:

Blessing of Desolation – 7 of crow or tome to cast. Gives an automatic trigger of Desolate Warping for Steampunk Abominations (SPA) and Desolation Engine (DE); automatic trigger of paralyze for Arachnid Swarms; and automatic trigger of Rot for many Resurectionist models.

Entropic Transformation – 7 of anything to cast. One of the best spells in the game. No resist and any model with 2 wounds or fewer is sacrificed (no slow to die!) and you get a Waif or SPA depending on model type.

Necromatic Unmaking – 9 of anything to cast. 3 wounds to any model and can target in melee. If the model dies you get a free SPA and it doesn’t generate counters.

Unnatural Wasting – 7 or crow or tome to cast. Only spell of his with a gun symbol (Ranged Attack) but one of his best. Any model hit with 7 or less wounds is in range for Entropic Transformation. 9 or less wounds and Necromantic Unmaking will finish them off. Only spell of his that doesn’t harm him.

Generally I use Necromantic Sacrifice to get Levi in line for a shot with his spells and then throw three at whatever model I want dead that turn.

(0) Actions and Their Uses.

Desolation – Generally a good option if you’re surrounded or in the middle of their army. I would tend to throw out three spells and then do that as a finishing move to kill him off for the turn or to finish off any low wound models his spells damaged.

Deaths Lessons – This is the one I prefer to use regularly. It’s a great way to check and make sure you’re going to have the right suits coming up for spells.

Army Composition:

Rusty Alyce – 8 stones for a major utility piece. She allows you to draw two additional cards each turn even though Levi’s rule is draw 0. She can also create additional SPAs for your army. I generally use her Bag of Tricks to cast Booby Traps turn 1 in order to kill Levi off for a new hand. (2 traps, 2 necromatic sacrifice, 3 deaths lessons, 1 closing phase)

Jack Daw – My new favorite model. The bonus to hand size means you will almost always have the right suit in your hand. He is almost indestructible as long as you have cards in hand. I tend to send him flying forward to cast his (0) aura Severed Ties. This prevents any model within 6” from cheating fate or using soulstones to add to duel totals. This fact plus Levi’s cast of 7 makes it very easy to get his spells where they can’t be resisted easily if at all.

Necro Punks – Leap and quick movement. These models I tend to bring along for claiming objective scenarios such as destroy the evidence. Rusty can also cast burn out on them so they gain reactivate as well.

Kill Joy – Since Levi and his Hollow Waifs come back any time they are sacrificed or killed they make excellent models to sacrifice to bring him into play. Since he is placed now he isn’t slow and should be able to wreck some havoc.

Steampunk Abomination – if you start the game with 4 you can start them in a diamond shape and just keep them advancing up the board using Keep Pace. You push the three Keep Pace into the front of the model that advanced and then advance the next and so on. Be sure to place one that has yet to go this turn in the center front basing the other 3 or you risk leaving one behind. Generally I use the 3rd models 2nd action to combine them into the Desolation Engine (DE). This is so that the DE gets a full activation as it replaces the models and gains the high number of AP on any of the models. Something should be in melee range at this point to attack 3 times.

Desolation Engine – Takes a wound every time it activates (important to remember) but it has a built in trigger to heal however much damage it does so pretty easy to keep alive. Great damage potential, high Cb (paired). It’s a solid model for Levi to use. If it creates an extra 2 SPA when it dies the two it creates will let you form a new one right away.

Ashes and Dust – After I’ve played him a bit I’ll have some ideas. Want to see how things work in actual game play not just theory.

Hollow Waif – Always companion with Levi or at least make it go first. I tend to keep mine back where it’s hidden from ranged or magic attacks. Remember the only way to remove Levi is to have him and all Waifs on the board dead on the same turn. Try to get a second Waif out as soon as possible.

Set-up and Activation Order:

Set up is highly dependent upon what your strategy and schemes are. Generally though Levi is across the table from something big he wants dead and Alyce is within 2" to get the bonus to hand size.

Activation order turn 1 is pretty much everything goes and then Levi goes. The reason for this is so that if they moved something up pretty far he can potentially take a model out turn 1.

On further turns order depends on what is being presented. If there is a solid target Levi can go after early on I tend to take it as long as the Waif is out of harms way. If there is a chance the Waif can die I try to have Levi go later in the turn to be sure atleast one of them is on the board during the closing phase.

I hope this helps you Levi players who are trying to figure out what to do with him. It seems that activation order is extremely important to this list. From what I've seen Rob able to do with him, the errata (or nerfing as some people whine) hasn't had a major affect on the viability of the list.

More Neverborn

Malifaux – To pair with the Ortega family commission that I've been working on is a Lilith's brood crew. I've blocked in the colors and started with the washes. My client wants them to have ebony skin with read hair, green eyes and purple. At first I thought this was going to be a really weird scheme to pull off, but after experimenting with different mixes and shades I think I've found the solution.

I started with a dark gray skin tone and then used a black wash to build up the skin to almost black, this way when I go back to do the highlights and detail work they won't become too gray. For the hair I'm going with a orange color that will be subtly different on each of the models. Lilith will be decked out in a white corset with a purple cape. The mature will have white hair and a purple toga.

Rather than having traditional metal weapons, my client requested that the sword be made of bone. This is going to be interesting to keep the white and bone contrasting without clashing to badly. Inspiration hit me at a knife store in TN, where they have knives with many different types of blades on display. I'm going to do the blades similar to a "stag" antler color, much like the knife my wife gave me for our anniversary [ happily married for 2 years :) ].

The Doctor is in ...

Malifaux – Building McMorning's lab has been quite the challenge. Casting and assembling the Hirst Arts Graveyard is a tedious and time intensive process. The results are really great and worth the time it takes to mold and cast them. I feel like I've already got my money's worth out of this mold just on this project. In addition I  made my own mold of a wooden door I found in my bits box. Making several of them saved time in creating doors and the style adds to the creepy castle feel I wanted to achieve. (If I build a Guild Holding Facility I'll reuse this mold.)

I built the base walls out of black foamcore. To avoid warping I used some square dowel rods to brace and support the structure. I noticed with the Qi & Gong that the large unsupported walls bowed slightly. My hope is to have the solid wood supports prevent this. Before construction I scored brick lines in all the wall sections. To frame in the doors I cut brickwork out of a heavy cardstock. [ TIP: If you check with retail stores and make friends with the managers you can usually get them to give you their old signage. Sometimes it's made out of styrene and sometime really heavy pressed stock. ] Framing the door covers up any gaps.

I used the same heavy stock to frame in to walls, and will also use it to cover any exposed foam. Eventually I'll add rivets to make the framing look like heavy iron bars. The flooring is also framed with the same heavy card stock. For the ground level I used a textured wallpaper that looks like cobblestone. On the second floor I used needlepoint mesh and framed the edges with plastic card.

Throughout the structure I've applied multiple pipes and exposed ductwork. This adds a level of detail to some other wise rather plain areas. I also plain on building bookshelves to fill in any bare areas. The lab equipment and tables will not be glued down to allow for repositioning. I want to keep the lab cluttered to only really allow small and medium bases to move freely. I'm sure at some point a large model will need to be in the lab and having moveable pieces will prevent models being stacked on top of stuff.

The grave spirit in book one is described as having tentacles, and also described as a Medusa-like woman. I'm going to take liberty and say the Gorgion is a Chthulu like beastie. That way I can use these cool buttons I found as decoration on the interior walls.

In addition to the graveyard the exterior has a roman-inspired facia. I went with this style as it reminds me of university buildings and government offices. I imagine McMorning would like to keep his lab similar to the morgue.

On the painting table...

Malifaux – I've started another commission for the Ortega family. This time around the client wants them to have black coats and to bring in orange to the color pallet. To compliment the orange and help deviate from the "halloween" look orange an black typically have I've brought in a n earthy green color. I think this helps to give them a nice look. Obviously they models are far from finished but I'm really happy with how they've turned out so far.  Doing black anything is always a challenge to highlight because if you do to much it looks gray, and to little doesn't bring out the definition of the models. Using washes over a dark grey I think I can create a water-color-like effect that will not only bring out the detail but also simplify the highlighting process.

I've also had a chance to work on McMorning's Lab a bit more. Having interior locations as part of "Rising Powers" is pretty exciting. So far I've framed in the lab and began detailing it out.

I've chosen to give the working areas a grated flooring to help with any spills or other fluids that might wind up on the floor of the lab. The rest of the floor is going to be decked out in cobblestones.

Product Review – Battlefoam Malifaux Bag

I've been meaning to replace my original army transport bag for a while now. The nylon was starting to crack and lifting all the tray out of the deep bag was getting annoying. After shopping around I decided to go the fanboy route and pre-order the Battlefoam Malifaux Bag. From the product shots it looked liked a really nice bag that would hold all my stuff. I've been looking at the bags for a while, but the army green was a bit of a turn-off for me. I received my bag today and thought it'd be nice to give it a full impartial review.

The Basics

To start, the exterior of the bag is constructed out of canvas, a big plus since it should wear better than vinyl and cracking won't be an issue. The embroidery is top notch, no annoying jump stitches to trim and the density is light enough that the flap bends easily. The case is really solidly constructed with no exterior pouches to snag on door handles or parts of your car (something that happened all the time with my other bag.) It's lined with some type of stiff material that gives it shape an makes it really solid, much like quality luggage. The handles are a nice heavy rubber with a comfortable grip. The strap connects with heavy metal clips that you'd have a hard time breaking.

Inside it comes with two sheets of precut foam and one larger block of pluck foam. (Everytime I see Battlefoam selling pluck foam I think back to the YouTube commercials with the owner bashing on how flimsy pluck foam is ... oh the irony.) The foam is a high density and much firmer than my other trays, I'm not sure if this is a good or bad thing, but time will tell. There is a separate compartment that is supposed to house your cards, decks, tokens and markers. The interior of all the compartments is lined with a black vinyl. There's a pouch that should fit a rulebook in here, a similar pouch in the miniature section as well as a canvas pouch on the outside.

The Good

This is a really solid bag. The construction materials are high quality and there has been some obvious thought put into the design and construction. I can fit all the released Ressurectionist models I own, a Lady J crew and a Pandora crew in here with room for more. Of course depending on how many more models will be released in the future I may wind up outgrowing the bag. It seems like it will fit a full faction with multiples of the minor minions fairly easily. However if you own everything that's been released you're going to need multiple bags. Little details like the metal clips on the strap, heavy duty zippers and a durable outer shell make this a bag worth owning. Having pouches to hold decks and spots for markers is a nice touch.

The Bad

Of course every bag has it's down sides and this one is no exception. The pouch that is supposed to fit all your cards won't fit the hard plastic sleeves that I use for my cards. I suppose if you had thin sleeves or just laminated your cards they'd fit. However there's no way that you can fit cards for every model the case holds in this tiny pouch. The pouch that is supposed to hold your tokens and counters is also tiny. I can barely fit two bags of body parts in it. In the same vein there's not a place for a tape measure, granted I like to use a TAC Template but I still need a full size tape to measure range on things.

It's slightly disappointing that the chose to not cover the back of the embroidered flap with material. It cheapens the look. It's be nice if the canvas pouch was doubled up as well, but I imagine this was done to allow it to lie flat.

I hope that they'll release the foam trays separately. The tray with the smaller slots doesn't fit most of the height 2 models, and the ones that do are a really tight fit. The tray designed for "oversized" models holds most of them nicely, but a few like the Death Marshalls and Seamus are an awkward fit. The 2" block looks like it will fit most of the odd sized models, but some might be a tight fit (Mature Nephilim, and Lord Chompy come to mind).

Final Thoughts

I like this bag. It's a good buy for the price point and looks sharp. If you're a big fan of Malifaux it's a great way to show it off. If you're not a fanboy, you can probably find another bag that will suits you just fine. I've got great use out of my Sabol bags and will continue to use them for other games. You can probaly find things that are cheaper than either company, but for ease of use and easy availability they get my vote.

I wish that Battlefoam had put more thought into the game aids section. There's enough room in the bag to make the pouches slightly bigger, and if they had a fold that allowed them to expand you could fit more in it. It's a bummer that I'll have to bring another bag to hold my stat cards, counter and tape measure.

The Qi & Gong...part one

Malifaux – On the edge of the city proper near the border of the Quarantine Zone, lies the Qi & Gong. This Three-kingdoms style establishment caters to all comers. Nestled within the smokey confines you may come across smugglers, murders, thieves or worse. All types come here to lose themselves in the opiate haze that permeates the building or to lose themselves in the embrace of the many soiled doves that call this place home.

I really like the idea of a "chinatown" within Malifaux, it fits with the time period and helps to make sense of things like katana wielding zombies. In book one Victoria meets Zoraida in one of the rooms, and gets a reading. That small chunk of the story caught my attention and inspired me to build a full size tavern. Most gaming terrain consists of small 5"x5" impassible building or ruined sections of the buildings. In reality this isn't really to scale and having a barfight in one of these is more like a fight in a small shack. Of course making something to scale creates all kinds of problems with storage and keeping it playable without getting boring adds to the challenge.

To create the Qi & Gong I started with a 24"x24" piece of MDF. From the description in the text it's a multi-storied pagoda style building. While that make look really cool it isn't exactly playable (having to move floors and whatnot). So I decided to stick with a 2 story building (6" high, 3" per floor). Rather than try to figure a way to remove floors during the game, I stuck with a wide open serving area, with a second floor of several rooms. Keeping the area under the rooms blocked off as a solid chunk created a solid base for the rooms above and helped to limit the area below. Realizing that a wide open area like that would be problematic giving  ranged lists an unfair advantage I added another sectioned off room. This is the "opium den" area it gives a more secluded spot for clients to partake in what ever they fancy.

Detailing a large box like this is always a challenge. It needs to be interesting by can't be cluttered so that it hampers usability. I drew up some tiles, doors and chinese-style gates that I converted to SVG files and cut out of cardstock with a Circuit machine. For the trim I found some craftsticks that had notches cut out of them which looked like they'd fit the bill. The railings were made from doll house parts cut down to fit.

It's still a work in progress and I'll post more in the future including a tutorial about making beds and tables.
