It's the Doc; Diggy-Diggy-Doctrine ... WIP

Relic Knights – I haven't gotten this on the table recently and I part of the issue is that I subconsciously don't like to play with bare gray models (or primer white for that matter). So to rectify that situation I decided that I'm going to get the base colors down on all the Relic Knights stuff I own. Painting each faction to completion (or at least the level I want) is going to take to long with the other painting projects I have in my que.

Exodus ... work in progress

Wild West Exodus – I've started assembling the Outlaw gang for Outlaw Miniature's Wild West Exodus game. This is a job for one of my regular clients who just picked up the game and sent the models off to me to assemble and paint. My understanding is this was another game that got Kickstarted and delivered fairly recently. I had looked at the models while the Kickstarter was going on and wound up passing because I couldn't justify another game at the time. (Looking at these models I question that decision...)

Unlike most recent Kickstarter projects these plastic models are really plastic. High quality gray hard plastic on sprues. It's an amazing concept really promise plastic and deliver something that can be glued together with plastic cement. I wish other cool million dollar projects would have followed suit but that's a rant for another time.

Putting these models together was a dream, the kit included paper printed instructions, numbered pieces on the sprue with intelligent cuts that allow the seams to be hidden fairly well. (No gluing faces on that I've seem so far ...) A tiny drop of cement, push the parts together and set it aside. No holding parts for hours, pinning or dousing it with CA Activator. It seems I've been dealing with to many other forms of "plastic" metal and resin  lately that I'd forgotten the reason I still love putting GW figures together, hard plastic kits are the way to go period.

I was quickly able to clean and assemble the ten outlaws, Wayward Eight and a few other models. I think in total it was only a few hours of sitting and gluing to get them all put together. One complaint though is the the printed instructions have the same "sprue-location-highlight" for every model, follow the numbers and full drawing otherwise you'll never find the parts you need.

After breezing through the plastic models I opened up the resin character models. These were not so easy to assemble. It took two thoroughly washing with a toothbrush to get all the mold release off, and even after that they still felt someone "slimy." The resin isn't as brittle as some types but it still wash tricky to cut. I used Gorilla Glue Gel Super Glue on these and wash able to get them to stick with minimal holding in place.

Once these dried I sprayed them with a red oxide primer to set up the base coat, as they're going to be primarily brown and silver.

Von Drake Manor ... Some Assembly Required

Von Drake Manor ... Some Assembly Required

Super Dungeon Explore - I finally started cleaning up my Von Drake Manor Minis, they've been staring at me for quite some time and I was going to make this my October project but some other stuff came up so I had to back burner it. Now that I'm taking a short break I was able to scrape off the model lines and fill the gaps with greenstuff. Just like the other Super Dungeon stuff I've cleaned up I sculpted the flagstones so the base has a bit more dimensionality and transitions back smoother.

Warhammer 40,000 - I was able to get another big 40K game in recently, this time around I had a chance to play against the Imperial Guard force that I spent most of the summer painting. Of course my own stuff wasn't quite fully painted (or completed for that matter ... yes I'm looking at you hoses for the Centurion conversion). However we still had a good time playing one of the Maelstrom of War missions from the rule book.

Black Ops - WIP Black Diamond

Black Ops - WIP Black Diamond

Relic Knights – Moving right along here's the Black Diamond with a basic coat of paint. I'm running low on the Adeptus Battle Gray that I like to use for dark gray/black models as a base coat so I'm going to need to look into a replacement color. Again I'm pretty bummed it was discontinued as I really liked this line of paint.

Warhammer 40,000 - I'm working on another simple tabletop commission that involves several hundred models. Obviously with the large model count my client wanted to keep things as cheap as possible, so these are going to be a basic paint and wash. Warhammer models tend to lend themselves to looking pretty good with this technique which means it's easy to crank through a ton of models and make them look consistent.

Seventh Edition 40K - 3000 Point Game

Seventh Edition 40K - 3000 Point Game

Warhammer 40,000 – Over the weekend I was able to schedule a 3,000 point game with one of the guys in my game club. We decided to play 3000 points using the mission cards with standard 12" deployment zones. Rather than play a standard mission we just opted to use the cards and score (1) VP for each unit you destroy.

Blast off ... Rocket Raccoon Costume

Blast off ... Rocket Raccoon Costume

Halloween – My son finally settled on his costume for Halloween this year. Thankfully he decided against being an airplane (that was going to be tricky to build) and instead opted to be Rocket Raccoon. He's to young to see the movie but he does enjoy reading the comics with me as well as the few cartoon episodes that have the Guardians of the Galaxy as guest stars.

Red and Brass, ready to kick some ...

Warhammer 40, 000 – Yes sir that's right I have another 40K commission. No guard this time around, and no imperial eagles either. I'll be painting up Chaos Marines. I'm looking forward to this job as Chaos was always my first love for 40K. The models were always so cool and fun to paint. I do have a bit of seller's remorse after parting with most of my Chaos Marines so projects like this make me happy and a little nostalgic.

Corsairs - Finished and In the Gallery

starnebula_isabell03.jpg

Relic Knights – The Star Nebula Corsairs are finally wrapped up and photos are posted in my gallery. Overall I'm happy with how they turned out. Still having issues with the material they're cast in but overall they look good at arms length.

Still loving the game and moving on to paint up some of my own models soon. My goal is to get a starter force painted up for each of the five factions I won before the end of the year. We'll see how this works out with my commission schedule but I'm staying positive I can get it done.

Terrain Making – I finally had a chance to get back to the series I started a few weeks ago. As I mentioned then I have a mold I made for craters back when they were a thing needed for Warhammer 40K. As such i don't want it to go to waste so I'm working on various terrain sets that use some or all of the crater to create unique items from a common mold.

Warhammer 40,000 – I suck. Plain and simple I've been sitting on this job for far to long. Part of the problem is the client has provided no deadline and has most of his other stuff that is playable so this is really just a bunch of stuff he got a good deal on and wants to match his other models. This is great for me as it means I just paint when I have a chance between other jobs but it also sucks because I feel guilty for having this for so long.

Random – As of late I've been reading a lot of graphic novels. I recently found that through our library collective I'm able to put holds on books from any library in the system and as it turns out that system has a bunch of comics. So I've taken a break from novels as I wait for the Horus Heresy stuff to be released in mass market paperback (I refused to pay more than $10 for bolter porn). I've been catching on on stuff that I missed.

On the painting table ... boosted

Relic Knights – One of the cooler thing about Relic Knights is the idea of boosts. These are small tokens/models you can buy with extra points to fill out your list. Not only does this give you something to spend that random 1-3 points on but it also adds a cool little "power-up" that you put out on the field.
